Pixelache Festival 2004, Kiasma, Helsinki and Fylkingen, Stockholm
Ultrasound Festival 2005, The Media Center and Bates Mill, Huddersfield, UK A cinematic piece made of video material captured from hundreds of road weather surveillance cameras of Finland during one year. A huge amount of video data was organized partly real time as a multi screen time lapse movie that showed the totality of Finnish road infrastructure that, while seemingly victorious, still struggled against floods, rains, snow and other natural forces creating colourful drama between technology and nature, profoundly entangled with each other. The piece also gave opportunity to reflect the construction of Finland´s identity by referring to one of the key historical attempts to construct finnishness, the highly popular Maamme kirja (Book of Our Land) written by Zacharias Topelius in 1875. Weather Matrix was a result of collaboration between me, Ville Hyvönen, Sami Jarvinen, Juha Kujanpaa, Antti Silvast, Heli Nikula and Sampo Pyhälä. The sound track for the piece was partly performed live by guest sound artist Juha Valkeapää and electric kantele musician Eva Alkula. Thanks to Leif Aaltonen and TAMK in helping to capture the wheather camera data. |
