Sockpuppet is a term that refers to extra or false identity of the member of the cyber communities. Sockpuppets are used, for example, in online forums and social media to create an illusion of support for the person behind the sockpuppets or his/her political agenda.
Finnish National Sock Puppet Theatre, inspired by the sockpuppet phenomenon, was an interactive performance mixing a lecture format, video screening and participatory puppet drama. In the first public appearance under this title I focused on the growing hate speech against immigrants among the finnish speaking online community through artistical analysis of the birth of Wikipedia article on mr. Jussi Halla-aho, allegedly the most prominent forerunner of the new racist discourse in Finland, basing his ideas on the work of European and North-American far-right ideologues. |
